Michelle Lewis is the newest member of the London Rotary Club. Michelle is welcomed to the Club by current Rotary President, Mike Giles. The London Rotary Club meets every Wednesday in the Overlook Room at the London Country Club and is currently accepting new members. Jamie Harrison, Treasurer of the London Rotary Club, welcomes Debbie Gilbert from REMAX to last week's Rotary meeting. Debbie gave a historical perspective on the current state of the real estate market in Laurel County. The London Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at noon in the Overlook Room at the London Country Club. Detective Chris Edwards and Don Wattenbarger accept a $1000 donation from Lori Acton, President of the London Rotary Club, for this year's Shop with a Cop and Shop with a Trooper program. This year's event will be held at the London Wal-Mart Super Center on December 5th Ed Marcum, Park Committee, Lori Acton, Rotary President, and David Vickers, Park Committee, accept a $1000 Community Grant donation from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. These funds will be used for upgrading and repairing playground equipment at the Rotary Children's Park on Dixie Street in London. Mike Giles, HRM from Walmart* Distribution Center presents a $1000 International Dinner sponsorship check to Lori Action, President of the London Rotary Club and Joe Caldwell, long time Corbin Rotary member and past District Governor. The 2nd annual International Dinner will be held in Corbin this year at the Corbin Civic Center on Gordon Hill on February 27, 2010. Festivities begin at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $25 each and are available from any London or Corbin Rotary member or at the door of the event. Jo Smith, Volunteer Director at Saint Joseph, London, was the featured speaker at this week's London Rotary Club. Accompanying Jo, were previous Volunteer of the Year Award Winners, Billie Ridings and Bob Hudson. Volunteers assist with many service-related areas surrounding the patient as well as their friends and family. There are currently 23 volunteers at the hospital. When the new hospital location opens in August the volunteers requirement will double. For more information on volunteering call 877-6013.

Monica Lawson who is a current Rotary Scholarship recipient and a junior at Transylvania University studying Personal Psychology, was the London Rotary Club's guest speaker last week. Monica shared with Rotary her work with the American Association of Suicidology. She spoke about suicide prevention and presented some very real and interesting statistics. The program QPR (question, persuade, refer) is being taught to area teachers and school staff in an effort to curtail suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among 15-30 year olds in Kentucky.
